One of the most common questions we are asked at Share to Buy is this: Can I buy any property with a shared ownership scheme? The answer is, no. Most properties for sale on a shared ownership basis are housing association properties. Historically, housing associations have benefited from Government grants to develop properties for sale through the part buy part rent ‘shared ownership’ scheme. There are now thousands of properties like this across the UK. There are complex reasons why it is mainly housing association houses and flats sold through the shared ownership scheme, but a key point is that the lease involved has certain undertakings required of the housing association which a private developer would be unable to provide.

Where can I find housing association property for sale?

You can find housing association flats and houses for sale on Share to Buy’s shared ownership property portal. There are new build properties available for sale and rent, plus second hand ‘resale’ properties where an existing owner sells on their share.
