Situated in South West London, the heart of Wandsworth, between the town centre and the river, is the site of Young’s Brewery, beer was produced on the site for 425 years starting from 1581, which made the Ram Brewery the oldest site in Britain at which beer had been brewed continuously. Brewing stopped in 2006 and a planning application to redevelop the site for residential and shopping/leisure "mixed use" was submitted in 2012. The borough has areas of expensive private housing with some of those adjacent to Wandsworth Common containing some of the most expensive town houses in England. There are also areas of council flats and mixed housing and Wandsworth is recognised for the very low rate of its council tax charges.
