Peabody deliver on their social purpose

Peabody Top the League: Delivering on their social purpose

Peabody understands the changing needs of its customer and is committed to creating quality homes in places that people want to live, by working with local communities to develop and promote well-being and a secure environment.

Founded by the American philanthropist George Peabody in 1862, Peabody has been creating timeless homes for over 150 years and is today one of the largest housing providers in London and the South East with over 66,000 homes.

As a leading housing association, Peabody deliver services to 133,000 residents, 18,000 care and support customers, and the wider communities in which we work.

Housing associations have long been accused of abandoning social rent to build more commercial tenures. However, according to Inside Housing’s report for the year of 2018/19, Peabody has topped the league as being a housing association most ‘devoted to social rent’, delivering the highest number of social rent homes within the sector.

Dick Mortimer, Executive Director Development & Sales at Peabody says:

One of the things I’m most proud of, is that we continue to provide good quality, genuinely affordable homes for those in the greatest housing need. We are delivering on our social purpose.”

In 2018/19 Peabody completed 1,104 new homes, of which 41% (427) were for social rent. This is reported by Inside Housing, to be the highest proportion of social rent homes delivered by housing associations with a programme of over 1,000.

Recently, housing associations have been criticised for not building enough social rented housing. Peabody work hard to generate a surplus each year to pay for and deliver this level of social rented homes.

Dick continues:

I am pleased that we have delivered on our promises, and will continue to maximise social rented homes as part of our programme. It is testament to us all that we continue to believe in and support the original and modern objectives from the 19th and mid-20th centuries, where Peabody has its roots.”

Peabody are proud of the homes they provide and aim to continue creating quality housing for those who need it the most, delivering on their social purpose for years to come.
